In the Gym with Jump Rope Master Buddy Lee

Written by Jen Jones, 28 Aug 2018

What piece of exercise equipment is inexpensive, is easy to tote nearly anywhere, can be used by the whole family, and improves cardiovascular fitness while toning muscle at the same time? If you said a treadmill, we need to talk. Did you know that jumping rope burns more than 10 calories a minute, while strengthening your legs, glutes, shoulders, and arms?!

Skipping rope is a part of every single 9Round workout, and for good reason. Jumping rope has been shown to help increase the intensity of circuit-training workouts, like 9Round. In order to provide members the best equipment and the best possible experience, 9Round has partnered with Buddy Lee Jump Ropes as the official jump rope of 9Round. Buddy Lee is known worldwide for his incredible jump rope skills, having put on exhibitions for Presidents and world leaders. He was a 1992 Olympian in Greco Roman wrestling and a 20-time National Champion in three different styles of wrestling.

After graduating from Old Dominion University with a degree in secondary education, Buddy went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was twice Marine Athlete of the Year. Buddy was also an Assistant Coach for the US Marines 5X National Championship Team and has been recorded as one of the greatest Marine wrestlers in the history of the Marine Corps. Today he is the president and founder of Jump Rope Technology, Inc. and the co-inventor and maker of the World's Best and Patented Speed Ropes, designed for all sports and fitness. Buddy Lee Jump Ropes are the official ropes of the US Olympic Team and, now, the offical jump rope of 9Round.

I’m going to get real with you here. Jumping rope ain’t easy. Especially when you’ve been out of the game since your third-grade double-dutch days. But with a lot of practice, and a little guidance from a 9Round trainer, you’ll be back up to your old playground tricks in no time. Below are a few tips from the Jump Rope Master himself, Mr. Buddy Lee, to help you get hopping...

According to Buddy, the key to jumping rope is to be light on the balls your feet. Your upper body should be relaxed, with your rope barely skimming the floor as you jump.

In this video, Buddy gives a crash course on the foundation of jump rope training, which transfers over to learning how to jump rope sprint. A training method regularly used by Mr. Lee incorporates four bounces with both feet and for bounces moving forward for an eight count, and again (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), and continues, increasing the speed with each set, while moving forward. Check out the video and try it out yourself.

Challenge yourself to become a better jumper by finding your baseline score, a measurement of how many jumps you can perform in one minute, two minutes , and three minutes, and work to increase your speed and skill each time you jump. The more proficient you become in jumping, the more your baseline score will continue to rise. The more you jump rope, the more proficient you become, and the more proficient you become, the more you start to see and feel the benefits.
